PoPville | Welcome to the beautiful life

polaroid_foto_bar_union_station

Thanks to a reader for sending word about a Polaroid Fotobar coming to Union Station:

UNION STATION – Washington D.C.
OPENING – JULY 2013

The reader writes it’ll be located in “the space will be at the end of Union Station by the McDonalds (obviously, from the reflections in the pic!)”

Engadget explains that it is:

where you can go and have your digital photos professionally printed…each staffed with so-called Photenders to help you get the best results, and equipped with a “patent-pending proprietary technology” that’ll let you wirelessly transfer photos from your phone to a workstation. What’s more, the stores won’t just be producing glossy photos, but what Polaroid describes as handcrafted pieces using canvas, metal, acrylic, wood or bamboo — those will be shipped to the customer within 72 hours.

Sounds cool.

“Dear PoPville,

Any more word on Firelake Grill? The sign has disappeared. We’ve been waiting in anticipation for it’s opening.”

Very strange. I looked in the window and it seems ready to open. A few weeks ago I saw them interviewing folks so I thought it’d just be a matter of days before they opened. Anyone hear what’s going on?

June 20, 2013 10:00 pm

A sophisticated night of classic soul, funk, soul jazz, and R&B in the heart of Mt. Pleasant. It’s an all-vinyl affair with a bias towards the sweet side of things, but if you like to dance, you’ll get your chance.

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a suspect responsible for attacking women. Detectives are investigating four recent incidents that appear to be similar in nature. In each incident, a male subject approached a woman while she was alone and stabbed or cut her with an unknown sharp object. In some cases the suspect fled when the victim screamed. The victims sustained non-life threatening injuries. Detectives are investigating the following incidents:

Sunday, May 5, 2013, at approximately 11:15 pm, an adult female was exiting her vehicle in the 400 block of Emerson Street NW, when a male suspect approached her and began stabbing her. The suspect fled when he saw a male witness. The suspect was wearing a dark hooded track suit with a large horizontal white stripe on the chest, and a yellow stripe on the sleeve.

Monday, June 10, 2013, at approximately 10:30 pm, an adult female was in the 1300 block of Decatur Street NW, when a male suspect grabbed her from behind and stabbed her. The suspect then fled. He was wearing yellow and black shirt with dark pants.

Friday, June 14, 2013, at approximately 12:05 am, an adult female was walking in the unit block of Adams Street NW, when a male suspect grabbed her from behind. The victim resisted and the suspect stabbed her and fled.

Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at approximately 12:15 am, an adult female was walking in the 1100 block of Allison Street NW, when a suspect approached her from behind and tackled her to the ground. The suspect produced a sharp object, cut the victim, and fled.

The suspect is described as being a black or Hispanic male with a light to medium complexion, short brown hair, and is 5-feet-8-inches to 6-feet-1-inches tall, with a slim athletic build. Anyone with information about these cases is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. If you have any animal/pet photos you’d like to share please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say the name of your pet and your neighborhood. Your photos will go into the queue (usually 3-4 weeks wait) and will be posted in the order I receive them. If you’ve already entered your pet and would like to do so again – that’s no problem – just space the entries out a bit.

Dink - ready for bed

“This is Dink, who went over the rainbow bridge yesterday. I adopted Dink 13 years ago from Partnership for Animal Welfare in Greenbelt. She kept our home in Adams Morgan safe from evildoers and constantly honed her champion snuggling skills. I love her and miss her so much.”

@esd asks on twitter:

“@PoPville ever hear any news on the shooting in Ledroit Park last Friday?”

From MPD:

On June 15, 2013, at approximately 0207 hours, two individuals were discovered by Third District Officers suffering from gunshot wounds in the 400 block of V. Street, N.W. Both individuals were transported to local hospitals with non life threatening injuries. In addition, an individual was stopped in the vicinity and three guns were recovered.

and

The suspect in this case is a juvenile with a violent history and we are working with the Office of the Attorney General on the prosecution of this case. I have also included the United States Attorney Roger Kemp who is the Third District Community prosecutor.

It would be helpful at sentencing if be community would write a Community impact statement. USAO Kemp can assist with the impact statement.

There was a second suspect involved and we are looking for any assistance with this case. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Metropolitan Police Department on 202-727-9099.

Enclose basement-level space under row house sleeping porch:

My husband and I are seeking to enclose the basement-level space under the old sleeping porch of our row home in Hill East as a DIY project. We would like to use the space more as a shed for bike storage and other garden equipment/tools than as a completely finished space in our house. Making the space secure and protected from moisture are our main concerns.

At this time, our plans are to frame walls using pressurized wood and covered with sheeting, a vapor barrier, and siding. We also plan to add a basement-size window. However, we are getting stuck on the right venting approach to use. Is passive venting sufficient?

Has anyone completed a similar project for your house? Any advice or lessons learned that you could share with us? Materials used? Is venting even necessary?

Please see the attached picture. (As FYI, we are planning to move the AC unit out of the space and move the downspout so that it runs along the side of our house rather than the center)
